how to scan a ship?

Ok, maybe i am too dumb for it but how do you scan the cruiser in the nebula?

I searched the manual, i searched the ingame controlle settings, i found nothing that tells me how i can scan that ship. I flew so close to it that i basicly could wave my hand to the people inside, i target every subsystem. I just dont complete the task.
