Ok, pertinent questions about WCS. was created by NKato
1. Can you create custom missions for multiplayer?

2. Can you fly capital ships in multiplayer?

3. If you can't fly capital ships in MP, what needs to be done to make it possible? Are there any mods available?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm looking at WCS as a training program for my organization in Star Citizen.

Thank you for your time.

WCS broke its multiplayer support in favor of more Wing Commander-esque features, so technically, no you can't create multiplayer missions for Wing Commander Saga. However, HLP forumite MatthTheGeek recently released his first draft of porting WCS back to the regular Freespace Open engine (the game engine WCS is based one), which does include full multiplayer support. You can look into that.

Capships are not, by default, flyable. Fortunately, I made a small mod that, among other things, does just that . More specifically, you want to extract and add the following files in the WCS Open mod:
data\tables\wcs-bp2-csc-sct.tbm
data\tables\wcs-csc-shp.tbm
data\scripts\csc_KeyPressed.lua
data\scripts\csc_KeyReleased.lua

That should allow to fly capships and give orders to your turrets.

About using WCS as a training program for Star Citizen: while WCS is a game worth spending time on, its gameplay is still as close as it can get of a game made in the mid 90s (the Wing Commander series, especially WC3). While not an expert on Star Citizen, I would suspect the actual gameplay to differ somewhat from what was the standard 15-20 years ago. Kinda like compairing the original Quake to, say, Team Fortress 2. Similar core elements, but very different games nonetheless. Still, it would be worth it to get back into the space dogfight combat thing before SC comes out :)

Anyway, aside from WCS and its lack of native multi support, you could try one of the other Freespace Open-based games, such as:

-The Babylon Project, based on the Babylon 5 TV show --> wiki link / forum link . It's a bit old, but the Zathras mod updates the base game a bit, and ensures compatibility with recent versions of Freespace Open. Like WCS, the game is free and does not require Freespace 2.
-Diaspora: Shattered Armistice, based on the Battlestar Galactica (reimagined) TV show --> wiki link / forum link . A recent game, it came out the same year as Wing Commander Saga, but is based on a much more recent version of the standard FSO engine. Like WCS, the game is free and does not require Freespace 2.
-Freespace Open itself, of course. It does require acquiring Freespace 2 first - the game is available on gog.com for 10$, but it's got like a bazillion mods for it, and the gameplay is very close to Wing Commander's. --> Installation instructions for Windows .
