Couple of nerdy ship class questions was created by iforgot
Hey everyone how goes it? I've been enjoying this great game and I'm nearing the end of the campaign I think, and there's several kinds of neat new ships starting to show up and a couple of nerdy questions occurred to me.
Is the in-game Confederation-class dreadnaught meant to be a refit of the design seen in WC2 or is it just a sort of "artistic license" version of what a Confederation class looks like? It looks absolutely gorgeous what ever it is!

In the game it seems like the CVA Jutland-Class is portrayed as the main class of fleet carrier with the Lexington-Class being the heavy carrier. I was under the impression that the Concordia-Class was the main fleet carrier and that the Attack carriers like Jutlands and bengal-class served in sort of a supplementary offensive role between the Fleet carriers and heavy carriers. Am I way off? A little bit off? Thinking way too much into a minor difference?
Probably, I just was hoping to see a wcsaga-ized version of Standoff's Concordia class model...
Anyway thanks again to the team for such a great game!

I'll add that the ships look absolutely fantastic. Better than every other space sim I've played. The fact that when you get down next to turrets and they still look as good as everything else... I can't compliment your team enough on the details. I noticed a gattling barrel on the Dreadnaught's light turret this morning, and from the first flight I noticed "decals" and such in the fine detail on ships.
This brings up an interesting point... Wouldn't it suck to have to be the guy who has to go out and change the light bulbs for the spots that light up the ship designations?

My kind of questions. ;) In answer your first question you are correct. The surviving Confederation-class dreadnoughts like TCS Armageddon all received extensive refits to keep them viable combat vessels. The TCS Concordia just did not survive long enough to receive the refit. Behind the scenes it also made the Wing Commander II design blend in with its WC3 counterparts artistically.

As for your second question, the Jutland-Class class is an fleet attack carrier while the Lexington-Class is a multipurpose fleet carrier. They are both fleet carriers but the former is tailored more for independent offensive operation while the latter is designed around more traditional fleet operating concepts. Saga actually has a balanced mix of the two classes on the front for a good chunk of the game. [spoiler:3tyxahw2]TCS Hermes, TCS Centurion, TCS Bradshaw, and TCS Kinny.[/spoiler:3tyxahw2] Others of both classes are seen or mentioned as well.

The Concordia-Class carrier was I believe a retcon to explain away the TCS Victory design from WC3 was being reused in WC4 with only cosmetic changes to the model. However the WC:Saga team, if I remember correctly, at one time was going the have the Hermes be a Concordia-Class carrier. A model of the ship in this form with its island on the starboard side and slightly different proportions was included in the WC4 tech demo for Saga Prologue but it has not been updated as far as I know.

indeed changing the light bulbs would suck in fact i would go as far to say that such a job would drive a man insane as he eva'ed to the outer hull watching his friend die around him in the inky blackness of space just to change a frigg'n light bulb he would no doubt eventually turn in to a scary homicidal maniac without a soul...

OMG! I think I just stumbled on psychopaths back story!(jk)

Obviously such bulb changes would be conducted after combat rather than during. It just seems to me to be a horrible task in war time, since no doubt those bulbs would be smashed every time a torpedo hits the forward top of the ship on its way into the hanger. I guess it's all part of being repair technicians.

I think that for the convenience the luminaire would be designed in such way that the light source could be changed from the inside of the ship. At least that's how I would design it for simplicity reasons ;)
