Blind first run and impressions. was created by irons
A friend linked me to this game recently. I love community and indie works. I downloaded, installed and fired this up. Not playing Wing Commander in 14yrs or so, I figured it'd give it a go blind. Here is what I found.

Options system and launcher went just fine, game loaded with no trouble. Using the deck for a menu system with not a lot of context and only small text in the bottom didn't very intuitive. So, I get into a first mission. This is exciting. It's only a couple way points, might see a little action hit a little bit of a tutorial. After all they are sending out a green like me with a veteran.

Well, what I got was nothing but repeating the same two tunes for 14 minutes. Silent comms (not even in squad banter), no tutorial and no action. My squad leader didn't even complain about me pushing past him and flying out of formation.

Now while it took me a bit to figure out what the buttons did and how to engage the "after burners" which contributed to my silent flight time, at the time the pacing felt slow. Like boring slow.

Once I got near the first way point. The action was fast and smooth. The only technical/design problem I had was not being able to view the key configs off the escape menu in mission.

This isn't in anyway meant to be a detraction from the game and I intentionally went in blind to see what experience was offered. Once I got the hang of things, it went well and was pretty good.

Keep up the good work.

Well...

after your wing commander is done talking your board computer should say something like auto pilot ready and a auto-nav lights up in the HUD.

Press : ALT - A

small cut scene.... and you are at the navigation point!

F1 = key commands
F2 = options

I guess that'll improve your blind tour. ;)

I did the same thing until I found out if you fly information and hit Alt-A when they ask to fly to next way point you same an enormous amount of time and afterburners. The trick is to be within 950 clicks of the escort vessel to get that comm. Some one correct me if this is wrong, I'm a newbie still learning the commands and having a blast.

With your regular wingmen/commander you do not need to be within 950 clicks (since you launch together).

However if you need to do a convoy you have to move with 950 clicks of the vessels, indeed.

Remember there is TWO campaigns in Wing Commander Saga, one is the Prologue that tells the history of your Training Academy years and forms the tutorial of the game and then the proper Wing Commander Saga campaign.
