You can raise money to have a limited budget... like just use green screen and add in CGI... they didn't use that so extensively when WCIII, IV & V were being done. It could be done. Just put AdSense on this site and it will raise money.
Ask some of the actors if they would participate. I bet some would, like the Star Trek ones do for fan made productions.
and have choices like in the 3rd and 4th games, because that was a really cool feature to think there were multiple paths.
Maybe have it take place after Prophecy and explore that storyline further?
Tolwyn mentioned in another thread that their unspoken agreement to not be shut down/sued by EA and other rights-holders is that they can't take any money for it, even donations. An attempt to do so for another such project would certainly be a breach of that unspoken contract resulting in the squashing of both.
Although the idea you present is interesting and at face value seems harmless, the issue here is that the game is free. If the developers and stakeholders in the game feel comfortable with the idea, they may approach EA for clarification and possible follow through; however, the expected answer will be "no", if otherwise, you might see a change on the forum.
The old adage that says "it is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission" does not hold true in this case. Failing to follow what EA has unofficially permitted us to do, holds the strong possibility of shutting this site down, and the game that cost some people 10 years of their life to be shut down as well.

True, one shouldn't risk the already achieved, and if there is an internal red line in the dealings with EA, then this should be respected. On the other hand, I could quite easily see EA using this as a free testing the water for the market potential for a new space flight simulator and with 100k downloads seeing their suspicions confirmed.
I think we probably can wait another 6 months and then I would bet a bottle of wine to see some reaction on their part like announcing a new game, relaunch etc.
Just look at Lucas arts re-releasing Monkey Island I+II - the same would be perfectly imaginable with the wing commander series.
I doubt EA would get into making another WC, or even modifying WC1+2 any further than the Kilrathi Saga pack did. The big names use focus groups, not fan requests, to base their decisions on. If they did anything else in the WC name, it would end up being an MMO only of some sort. I no longer have faith that EA can do anything that we fans would consider justice to the WC name or style. Call me a hater, but the kind of rehash sludge that has been coming from the big names the past several years had been entirely outclassed by the hard works of the indie market in terms of true fun.
guys, if you want a big scale WC game, go to EA. even with donations or a kickstarer we wouldn't even come close to the budget needed to pull that off. You have to understand, a WC style game would cost these days at least a two digit number of millions of dollars. If you want an MMO think more like around 100 million dollars and a several hundred strong developer team not to mention a huge serverfarm.
Sorry folk, you don't make an MMO in your garage. Forget it. Theres a reason only very large companies with a big budget begind them do massive online games. Even if we did have the money and everything, we don't know the first thing about pulling something like that off. The best people in the industry do it and still run into huge problems.
You want a large scale big budget WC game? Talk to EA.
