how did wing commander get so boring? was created by BaronVonSnakPak
im playing the first mission and according to the in-game clock ive been in this mission for over 50 minutes now. this is averaging around 15 minutes to get to each nav point, with 3 sentences of dialogue around the half-hour mark, 5 enemy fighters total, and the same song looping over and over.

this is the most dreadfully boring space combat game ive ever played. is every mission like this?

And you didn't listen / watch when the game told you to use auto-pilot because...?? Why? :o

This full release of Wing Commander Saga contains two campaigns. The first is an upgraded version of the original “Prologue” campaign. It has been upgraded with an expanded story, more characters in-game, Wing Commander style autopilot sequences (rather than the long, time accelerated autopilot sequences used in the original prologue) and updated graphics and game play. This five mission campaign set aboard the TCS Wellington teaches the player how to play Wing Commander Saga and sets the stage for the main campaign. You can select the prologue by going to the campaign room and highlighting the “Prologue” campaign. Even if you played the original prologue, we highly recommend you play the updated prologue to bring you up to speed with all the changes that have happened since the original release.

From there, you can go to the campaign room and select “The Darkest Dawn” campaign. This campaign will assume that you have learned everything that the “Prologue” campaign is designed to introduce you to. This is the all new, 50 mission campaign based on the TCS Hermes.

a case of multiple assumptions.
- i assumed it would be like wing commander, where it was relatively short distances between nav points
- i assumed auto-pilot would only take over my steering, not forgo vast chunks of space

that being said, if they intended for you to play the game by pressing alt-a all the time, why not just shorten the distances?

Seriously, this is how *ALL* the other Wing Commander games work; it wasn't a question of inventing a new mechanic for this game or anything. Blame Chris Roberts if you like, but not the devs of this project. Oh, and I'll warn you, if you flame Chris Roberts around here...well, some of the long-time fans might take exception to that. Fair warning ;)

Erm... just a wild guess here but... did you honestly play through the original Wing Commander without using the autopilot?

ive only played WC1, but i dont remember auto-pilot and jumping around. the nav points were relatively close to eachother and there were a good amount of dogfights in between. you flew out of the tigers claw and got into the thick of it.

so if the rest of the WC series was all about auto-piloting and whatnot, i apologize. to me it seemed like a carry over from freespace, which i havent played in years and forgot about all the jumping you do in that game.
