Apply for the Closed Beta Test!

FROM: Rear Admiral Tolwyn, CINCWEAPONSDIVISION
DATE: 2011.23.01

Our team is seriously considering starting a beta test at the beginning of February. There is a caveat, though; the number of beta testers will be limited. However, we are now accepting applications for the upcoming beta test of Wing Commander Saga, our remake of the famous space simulator universe. To participate in this exciting adventure, fill out the beta tester sign up form.

Beta testers need to meet the minimum computer specifications – detailed on the "System Requirements" page – and have internet access.

Interest in games -- especially space sims -- is an advantage, as is any testing experience you might have. Applicants have to be aware that beta testing is not just about playing and having fun with the game, and that there is work involved. Testers will be asked to devote several hours per week to testing and will be asked to test certain missions, weapons, or ships. Testers will also be required to send in bug reports and answer the occational test survey to be able to continue their participation in the beta test.

We are looking for people that can communicate their ideas clearly and have an eye for detail. During the testing process, you will have to explain to us how you found potential bugs and problems in the game and how to reproduce them. We will also ask for your views on game design and playability in order to improve the game. This gives participants several opportunities to contribute to the creation of Wing Commander Saga.

We can't overestimate the value of fresh play tester eyes on the product. As developers, we look at the thing all day, everyday, and to be honest, we lose perspective. When we're able to watch a new "fresh to the game" player run through the game, we get to see the game play out in a whole new way. We get to see when things are good, but more importantly, with the aide of our new set of eyes we can't hide from something that's just not working. We're forced to face it and fix it -  which leads to a stronger product.

Yes No Does sby know: how deep gotta be the reports of the beta tester to the developer team?

Yes No A bug description must be precise and easy to follow (recreate), the more precise the better.

Yes No I have been waiting for this so long now that I would probably only hurt myself to see random missions and pieces of the game to test. So, even if "every fiber of my being" cries out to beta-test this beauty, I must (try) and wait for the final release laugh

Bugs/Suggestions Yes No if i can get into the beta test. Bug reports only? or are suggestions welcome too (in case there is something that the particular betatester is finding weirdor hard to grasp in a certain situation)

Good question, I was wondering when it would show up. There is nothing wrong with bringing up suggestions - in the end, it all depends on our time frame.

Suggestions Yes No yes the last thing i would wantto do is to delay the game any further. but then again it is not my decision to make and as a betatester my first priority would be feedback.

i recently participated in the black prophecy beta and it realy turned out to be incredibly fail. and i wrote several pages of suggestions like the rest of the community but the developers just didnt care to listen to anything.

Yes No That is actually quite common. Developers are constrained by deadlines set by the publisher.

Yes No THIS IS MEANT IN JEST

REALLY

Part of me doesn't care about this whole "testing" thing, I really, really just want to play the game. I understand the importance of proper testing, and I don't want you guys to push out an unplayable game as am sure you could have a long time ago.

But let put a time line out for you. I found about this game when I was a freshman in high school. My brother-in-law, then just my sister's boyfriend, was on his second year in college. In the time I have been following your updates, he has graduated college, gone to Naval OCS, and earned his wings. He is now an ACTUAL pilot flying the P-3 Orion. I graduated high school, Navy boot camp (Division 271), Naval Hospital Corps School, and am now nearly finished with Field Medical Training Battalion. It's been awhile since I stumbled across a link on the PC Gamer Podcast site promising a new Wing Commander game.

Honestly though, no amount of waiting has dulled my anticipation of this game, and now I'm just that much more pumped that its coming is so near. I understand you all have lives outside the mod, and this wasn't really meant as an insult in any way. Looking forward to the final product! :)

P.S. I just got an Alienware, will that meet the standards for the Beta? :)

Playtesting time Yes No I just applied for the beta, and I really hope to be selected, though I know the chances are probably against me. But then I read that part about devoting several play hours a week per tester. Well, that sounds reasonable, but due to a set of circumstances, I would be able to devote a couple of hours every day, seven days a week, to testing. And at the first, I thought I wouldn't have enough spare time to fulfill the beta test minimum.

What about... OS X? Yes No I'm somehow surprised:

Don't you need to test or don't you care about OS X?
Ever since I found the "Prologue" I was glad that it runs on OS X. And since up to now the "system requirements" claim that WC Saga will support OS X (not too common for a Freespace mod) I was eager to see this game finished.

But the Beta Tester sign up form doesn't allow to choose OS X. And I doubt it will run in my XP VM... ;-)

And that with good reasons. We do not have the hardware to ensure MacOS X functionality at this point, which is why we concentrate our efforts on getting the Windows version done first. Support for MacOS and Linux will be added at a later stage.

Alienware is only Producer. If you say, you got an Alienware...it says the same, if you would say "yes, I drive a BMW"

Both Companys have many, many Products...old and new...
