Know Your Shipmates: Confed Capital Ships - Entry 1: Clarkson

Have you missed us? We're sorry for the long hiatus in our updates. We have been continuing to work on development since our last update, and now we bring you are latest, albeit belated, development update for Wing Commander Saga. This week we would like to talk a little bit about how our texture style for Confederation warships has evolved as the game development has progressed.

We knew from the moment on when we redesigned our Kilrathi warships that we were going to need to do the same for the Confed counterparts to maintain coherence in our visual style. In early concepts we wanted to stay away from a traditional military look, so we started off with a worn down metal texture. We were still learning the tech at that point, so we weren't solid on what could and could not be pulled off easily so we went with something a little on the safe side.

We went forward with this concept, getting it modeled, skinned, and in game. But, as often happens, we can’t often see existing problems until you get an asset in the game. We realized that the worn down look wasn't working. So we made some adjustments and variations to the base map which made a marked improvement. In a twist irony, as time went by and the texture work began to get more fleshed out, the product became more and more military looking (which we were originally avoiding).

At that point in time we also added sophisticated armor plating. We actually had a good foundation to build upon thanks to the work done on the Kilrathi textures. We wrote a simple Photoshop script that creates armor plates in a matter of minutes (thus saving us a lot of time).

Finally, we added specular, glow, and normal maps. Normal maps are one of my personal favorites. Basically, normal maps are used to greatly enhance the appearance of our low poly models without using more polygons. This technique allows us to create highly detailed, impressive models with very small impact on performance, allowing Saga to look and play great on a wide variety of machines.

This is a great example of not knowing until we needed to know it. In developing a project like Saga, assets are going to have to change as the game evolves, grows, and changes. As such, any assets we made at the beginning often times just don't quite fit when we get to the end. So we have to keep ourselves flexible. After all, in the end, it's about what's best for the game and the player.

Our next big big focus, now that the assets for the first part of the game are finalized, is to start preparations for the closed beta test. That’s right, we said beta test. This is a big milestone for us. Once these preparations are complete, we will put a beta test application form online.

Now that we're closing in on the end, we are hoping to be able to update our website more regularly. In the near future we plan to do some updates on the story and talk a little bit about our characters; so as the development winds down we'll be talking less and less about the process and more and more about the game itself.

Yes No Ships are looking great fellas keep up the good work. Also nice to hear the beta being mentioned, been looking forward to this game for soo long now that it\'s good to hear even a whisper of finalisation :grin

This may be a stupid question but why were you guys trying to avoid a \"traditiona l military\" look, they are warships after all?

Yes No OMG, these AMG\'s look great!
How long does it usually take from the closed beta test to the release? How do you guys think about christmas 2010? Doesn\'t that sound good?

Yes No Let\'s just say we do have a fixed schedule internally now and we promise to try our best to stay inside that schedule. But since we cannot guarantee this, please understand that we will not publish any release date until we are sure enough that we CAN keep it.
Taking your example with Christmas 2010: I think you\'ll agree that it would be a big letdown if we told you such a date was our release date and then we couldn\'t hold it.
So just be patient with us. We ARE in the final stages. That much I can say.

Yes No And I though on the 5th picture 2 AMG are shown. How sure are you with your statement?
They already look very big, how much more epic must a AMG turret look like?

Yes No yes i am sure. the 5 pic has the same gun as the gun on the other pics(9 and 10). and the transport has only normal laser turrets.

Actually no. The barrels are different. But don\'t worry. You\'ll figure out which turret is for what once we release pictures of the rest of the Terran ships ;)

Yes No :eek :) :grin Final stages? I have been waiting for this game fos SOO LONG now (I\'ve changed 3 computers since I first read about WC Saga!). I\'m not asking you when it is going to be released, since I know that you are working hard on your spare time, but I have to say...this is the game I\'ve been looking forward for many years (since WC3: Heart of the Tiger, and we all know where in the past that was!), a true WC game (not like the freelancer, Starlancer and yes, even Freespace, wich I have total respect for by the way).
Really hope this project gets as quickly as possible to the finish line and as someone mentioned, christmas time would be the most beautiful new year gift you could possibly imagine for the WC fans all over the world.
P.s. it would be great if you could somehow obtain to include a video comment of Chris Roberts himself for the final game release of WC Saga(in the form of an estern egg to be discovered during gameplay 8) It would be great to have an opinion from the main actors from WC3 too. I know it is unlikely this will ever happen but still, you could at least try to get in contact with them. I think at least one of them would respond :p Keep up the great work!!!

Yes No The 5th picture with the turrets are AMG\'s. The model is one of mine that I used as a guinea pig.

Yes No hey i missed reading new updates, but its good to know that you guys are still working hard at it, i just wanted to ask will we be able to play online with each other, that will really prove who is the best wing commander pilot. lol :grin :grin me lol lol lol

Yes No The engine supports multiplayer, but it\'s pretty buggy right now, so we can\'t promise that it will be ready in time and we won\'t delay the release for this feature.

Yes No @Ph3NiX
I don´t think, the actors would actually care. The fact, they played a character in a pc game, years ago, doesn´t make them fans. Starring in a video game among a porn queen is not what I would call a first-rate role, if I were an actor. Maybe they even don´t want to be reminded of these times, when they really needed the money.
Well, I think at least Tom Wilson would like that. I´ll write him a message, soon! ;)

Yes No Dear Wc-Saga Team.
I have my eyes some time at this project and every update is like a great hallelujah.
This project is a dream come true and i´m happy to read that you are in the final stages.

But my question is if there will be a german version?
As i know you have some german members so it should be possible.

Of course i understand English but it would be nice to play the game in german ;-)

re: Yes No Quote :

While it is true, that there are German members, let\'s stay realistic. At this point it is very unlikely there will ever be a German version produced by the WC Saga team.
Simply because it is too much work. We have now invested nearly a full decade into this project and to be honest, we\'re glad now when it\'s done.
Translating the Game would require translation of an incredible amount of text, that took us already nearly a year to proofread and it will take even longer to find voice actors. Several language jokes won\'t work out so they have to be replaced or faked... All that together, I\'d say is 1-2 years of work.
And to be honest, none of us are willing to invest that much time anymore.
This DOENS\'T mean however that there will never be a German version. All necesarry data is easy to replace once you know how to use the tools, which takes a few weeks maximum.
The rest would be up to a team willing to invest the time.
I really really doubt that will be us.
This is a mammoth project and we\'ll all celebrate once we\'re done and then we\'ll all fall asleep for 6 months or so ;-)
So if you\'re looking for a German version, feel free to find other people who\'d like this and organise a team.
It\'s easy enough to do, it\'s just a lot of work.

re: re: Yes No [quote=KeldorKatarn...took us already nearly a year to proofread and it will take even longer to find voice actors.

Just noticed this might be missunderstood. I meant finding German voice actors. I didn\'t mean it will take US more than a year to complete this step. So calm down ;)
