This is an interesting one. The game used to work perfectly for me. I've played all the way through with no graphical issues at all.

Went to fire it up today and all I get on start up is the audio for the intro. No video, just a black screen. Uninstalled and reinstalled, not any better. Tried various graphic adjustments to no avail. I did not delete user files, but I thought they might have been wiped with the uninstall, and I can't find them elsewhere. To my knowledge, I have had no video driver updates since the last time I played. No hardware changes at all.
Specs:
Intel Core2Quad 2.66 on an Asus P5Q
NVidia GTX550 TI
Plenty of RAM
Running off of a second hard drive, same as originally.
WinXP SP2, DirectX9.0C
Dual monitor desktop but single monitor active for games

Really...nothing has changed with the possible exception of something in the software environment, but I have no idea what it could have been. Any ideas?
I should add that after the intro music starts, I can hit escape and move the mouse around blindly, hearing it pass over hotspots. Whatever this is only affects the video.

Have you tried alt-tabbing?

yeah. The update doesn't help either. Could it be picking an incompatible video codec? Would that prevent the main menu from showing as well?

Tried uninstalling a bunch of codec programs I had for other, less than cooperative, games. Also uninstalled the Opan AL drivers and reinstalled. No help there. I'm out of ideas.

Hmm... Feel stupid now. Evidently I was missing a driver somewhere. I updated my video card drivers and it started working. Strange that it went missing, but meh... it's winblows. Sorry to bug you, Tolwyn.
