Well, this mission drived me nuts beyond words.
So after some try, and under time pressure I used the skip mission trick.
The recipe ? Well setting "E" to max, and started writing my name inside the flight deck using my cockpit and alot of afterburner fuel.
Not exactly pretty but damn efficient.

Not sure if this is an actual request for advice or just to rant.
Spoiler: show
It's mainly just a bunch of dogfighting, mostly easy stuff. First, hit the afterburners and then toggle the glide. This will get you there on-time and not waste any fuel, which you'll need.
You can't save the Kinney. Once you get to the smoking remains, your only task is to protect the Battleaxe and the shuttles. Just take out the two waves of fighters. After the AP, take out another wing. At WP3, You have two wings inbound and two corvettes tossing Skippers at the Battleaxe. Head starting for the corvettes first. When you get the launch warning from the BA, start hitting B to pick up the Skipper when it decloaks. Sometimes it's in front of you, sometimes you've passed it. Get a quick Im-Rec lock and fire at it. Even if the missile doesn't take it down ,there will be a smoking trail to target in on. You've only got about 45 seconds between launches, so spin around and keep heading for the corvettes, repeating the procedure. You'll probably end up taking out another one before you start firing on the corvettes. Once you get a launch warning, spin and head straight back for that glowing set of engines that is the BattleAxe. The Skipper will appear somewhere along that vector, and even if it cloaks again you know generally where to fire, as the BA is a small target from this range and limits the space that the skipper will be in.
Finally, get back to the corvettes and take them out. Chances are the other fighters will have taken out the Dralthis and will be firing on one corvette. Start killing the other one, concentrating on engines (their explosions seems to do some damage to the ship) and the weapons subsystems.
Once the corvettes are down and the Skippers eliminated, the mission is pretty much over.

I finally beat this mission. And got a Silver Star. Guess the 10 times I played it worked. Someone said in a post above I think that setting yourself up about 10k from the corvette and just keep hitting the "B" key and taking out the skippers with IR missiles. I'm not sure if it was luck but it worked. I got 3 of them and we took out the last corvette before the 4th one launched. You guys are in for a treat flying with the "Mud Sharks" on the next mission. Those ships are awesome. The lasers will kill anything and your wingman sounds like Clint Eastwood on a bad day. I about gave up on this mission but the stubbornness in me wouldn't let me.

I have failed three times so far; here is a question RE: the Skipper: does it have to decloak to strike the Battleaxe? I am considering keeping close to her & just wait for the missile to get close rather than go 'ripping' after them.

6000-8000 is the range where you can spot and catch all of them save your image recognition missiles and if you fail 2 more times you can skip

So are you saying I need only stay 6 to 8 thousand units off the stern of the 'Axe' & I will be in adequate position to pop those 'skippers'?

I'd advice 8000-10000 away from the Battleaxe (between it and the corvettes).
If you are confident: after you took down the first skipper afterburn towards the vettes and disable the launchers. Intercept following skippers at the moment of launch.

match speed with the frigate and glide so you can aim in all directions and save you image missiles for the skippers around 8000 is a good spot but don't waste time being fussy with it get in position and start jamming the "b" key also i had to stop 3 missile on this level and i beat it on very easy so other peoples advice have priority over mine

I am stuck at this mission also, and I am getting to the point where I do not want to play the game anymore. I set the difficulty to the easiest level because at this point, getting to the point of where these $#@! skippers are is boring. When I get to the point where we are all racing to save the carrier and I put the ship on glide, I start doing something else on my other computer just to pass the time! I just tried this again, taking one of the other posters advice and hanging around the Battleaxe. I knocked out what I thought was the only two skippers. Afterwards, I headed to the Kilrathi cruisers, took out the launcher on one of them right before it was destroyed, then shortly afterwards, the other was gone. I thought to my self, great...I finally got through!! I started heading back to the Battleaxe, and it explodes.....WTH!!! Both Kilrathi cruisers were gone!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!
